Real Gouda stroopwafels, straight from the market stall

Three generations of the Vergunst family have baked stroopwafels to the same recipe. You will not find us in a supermarket or a webshop. You will find us behind a blue and white market stall: Fridays in Katwijk aan Zee, Saturdays in the centre of Leiden.

Good to know

Where can I find you?

Every Friday at the weekly market on Marktplein in Katwijk aan Zee, and every Saturday at the Leiden market on the Beestenmarkt, next to the canal boat jetty. Both days from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What is a stroopwafel?

Two paper-thin waffles with a layer of warm caramel syrup in between. It was invented in Gouda and ours is still made to the family recipe written down there in 1951.

How do I eat it?

Put the stroopwafel on top of a hot cup of coffee or tea for about a minute. The steam softens the syrup and warms the waffle. That is not a tourist trick, it is how the Dutch eat them.

Can I take them home on a plane?

Yes. Sealed packs keep for weeks at room temperature and travel well flat in the middle of a suitcase. The Delft blue tin protects them best and doubles as a biscuit tin afterwards.

Do you have a webshop?

No, and that is deliberate. Our waffles are at their best fresh from the market stall. For larger orders or corporate gifts, email info@tonyvergunst.nl.
